Saturday 9: Chains (1962)

Unfamiliar with this week’s tune? Hear it here.

1) The song is about a woman who is in love with her boyfriend, but still attracted to someone else. Do you believe a woman can be in love with more than one person at a time?
Yes, although you didn’t hear that from ME!

2) What about the male of the species? Do you believe a man can be in love with more than one person at a time?
Of Course, what’s the difference.
3) This lyrics were by Gerry Goffin and the music by Carole King. Carole was a favorite guest of David Letterman’s. When she appeared on his show, he often commented on how impressed he was by her firm handshake. She credited her memorable grip to time spent milking goats on her Idaho farm. Have you poured goat milk on your cereal? Eaten goat milk yogurt or cheese?
Nary one goat has ever passed through these lips… baaaaa
4) When it first came out, “Chains” was a favorite of 18-year-old George Harrison. It was at his recommendation that the Beatles added it to their early stage shows and even recorded it on their first album. When you were in high school, what was one of your favorite songs?
Anything and everything Disco and Rock and Roll. I’m going to have to go with Cat Scratch Fever, on the R&R side, and Lots of Donna Summer!
5) In 1962, when this song was released, epic movies were popular on the big screen. The Longest Day was three hours long, and Lawrence of Arabiaran more than three hours and a half hours. Today’s most popular movies are nowhere near that long. Do you think the average American has a shorter attention span today than he did in 1962?
I believe we are SO DISTRACTED these days. Remotes flip channels and we don’t stay focused. Fast Food, we drive through and pick up  supper rather than take the time to cook. Our entire lives are made up of not staying focused.
6) In 1962, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy went on a two-week goodwill tour of India and Pakistan. She received a ceremonial “welcome necklace” in India. Made without jewels or precious metals — just beads, sequins and paper — it was valued by the First Lady for its delicate appearance and craftsmanship, and today it’s on display at the John F. Kennedy Library. Tell us about a piece of jewelry that means a great deal to you, and why.
Well, I lost them about 3 years ago down a sink, but my brother and sister in law got me gold loops back in  2000. I never ever took them off. Probably for 4 years. I LOVED those earrings.
7) In Pakistan, Mrs. Kennedy made headlines by riding a camel. Have you ever ridden a horse, donkey, camel or elephant?
Just a horse, and that didn’t go so well!!
8) Also in 1962, the New York Newspaper Guild went on strike, so the nation’s largest city went 114 days without a single daily paper. In 2018, how do you get your news?
VIA the net.
9) Random question — Complete this sentence: Before I go to sleep, I always
Ask God to change my heart so that I am a different person.

SATURDAY 9: BACK IN THE USA (1978)

Unfamiliar with this week’s song? Hear it here.

1) This song lists seven cities — New York, Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, Chattanooga, Baton Rouge and St. Louis — that Linda just loves. How many have you visited?
hmmmm. no NY. called LA home for 4 years, never been to Detroit, although I have an odd desire to spend the night there sometime. Yes Chicago ( and I listen to the scanner http://www.broadcastify.com  every night, Chicago PD) yes Chattanooga, yes Baton Rouge and yes St Louis. I need a vacation.

2) The lyrics refer to hamburgers sizzling on the grill. What toppingsdo you believe make a perfect burger?
A1 and  Cheddar cheese, leaf lettuce and a juicy tomato. Bun grilled to perfection.
3) The original recording of this song by Chuck Berry has always been one of Linda Ronstadt’s favorites, one she used to enjoy singing along with in the car. What’s the most recent song you sang?
I was just singing ‘you are so beautiful to me’ to Casey while she was having a seizure.

4) Linda sang The National Anthem at Game 3 of the 1977 World Series. The New York Yankees won both that game and the series. How is your baseball team doing this season?
CLEVELAND INDIANS  are rockin it!!!

Since this is our last Saturday 9 before Independence Day, let’s ask some questions about the holiday.

5) During the Revolutionary War, General Washington celebrated the 4th of July by giving his troops a double ration of rum. Will you imbibe any spirits on Independence Day?
Not a single one.

6) The first man to sign the Declaration of Independence, John Hancock, said he wrote his name so large King George could see it, even without his glasses. Do you require glasses for reading?
I do.
7) Since July 4 is a federal holiday, banks are closed and there’s no mail delivery. Thanks to email and ATMs, Sam finds going withoutthose services isn’t a hardship. What about you? Will you find itinconvenient that banks and the USPS are closed on July 4?
Personally, I haven’t driven in a few months, and we are tapped til the first, so we aren’t even thinking of going anywhere.
8) The first 4th of July parade each year is held at 12:01 AM in Gatlinberg, TN. Will you attend a parade or fireworks to celebrate the 4th?
Nope.

9) More and more Americans celebrate our nation’s holiday by eating foods from Italy and Germany. For the July 4, 2016 holiday, more than $50 million was spent on Italian sausage and bratwurst. What’s on your 4th of July menu?

Whatever we dig out of the freezer. And some Handles… its not on my 16:8 diet, but I am so hungry for some http://www.handelsicecream.com/

Mother and Child Reunion (1972)
Unfamiliar with this week’s song? Hear it here.

1) The title of this song, “Mother and Child Reunion,” came from a dish Paul Simon had at a Chinese restaurant. “Mother and Child Reunion” was chicken and egg drop soup. When did you last eat chicken? Today, we had chicken Quesadillas for lunch

2) Paul Simon’s mother, Belle, was an English teacher Monday through Friday and then gave piano lessons on the weekends. Have you ever worked more than one job? A couple of years while baking I worked Target at night, or Salem Golf Club, just for extra cashola

3) Mother Winters taught Sam to always dispose of the dry cleaning bag, as storing clothes in the bag may discolor the fabric. Do you have any useful household hints to pass along? 91% rubbing alcohol on a good (Bounty) paper towel will take up the odor and stain of pet tinkle.

4) Have you put away your winter clothes yet?  They all just stay in one closet

5) Flowers and plants are popular on Mother’s Day. How is your yard or garden? Is it green and/or blooming? Too much foot problems to be able to go out and prep the yard this year. Just had another surgery 5 days ago, and another upcoming in June.

6) In the 1600’s, the British began celebrating “Mothering Sunday.” Children presented flowers to their mothers after Sunday service. When did you last place flowers in a vase? Where they store-bought, or picked from someone’s garden? Store bought, from my sister a few weeks ago.

7) The German word for “mother” is “mutter.” What other German words do you know? Nein and sprichst du deutsch?

8) When Sam was a teen, her mother used to scold her for monopolizing the family landline. With the advent of cell phones, do you think parents and children still clash over telephone etiquette? I cannot even imagine being a parent with children that had cell phones.

9) To celebrate Mother’s Day, Sam is giving away her mother’s favorite, Hershey Bars!Would you prefer classic milk chocolate, dark chocolate or milk chocolate with almonds? Milk with almonds please

Saturday 9: Standing on the Corner (1956)

3) The members of The Four Lads met at Toronto’s St. Michael’s Choir School. Growing up, did you attend parochial or public school? Parochial til the grade, then public

4) The Four Lads always wore jackets and ties when they performed. Do you enjoying dressing up? Or would you rather keep it casual?  Keep it casual!

5) While this song was a hit for The Four Lads, they were completely overshadowed in 1956 by Elvis Presley and “Heartbreak Hotel.” Who do you think dominates today’s music scene? Blake Sheldon

6) The Wizard of Oz aired on TV for the first time in 1956. Sam was never crazy about those flying monkeys. Tell us about something that frightened you when you were a kid. There was a commercial for Axion ( I believe ), it was a soap tablet that you dropped into the laundry. The ‘dropper’ was a hand. I remember being terrified by the hand.

7) What scares you now? Life.

8) Since this week’s song is about pretty girls: 1956’s Miss America was Sharon Ritchie of Colorado. Today Colorado has the distinction of being the home of more microbreweries than any other state in the union. Which are you most particular about — your beer, your wine, or your coffee? Coffee.

9) Random question: We all have small, irritating habits, like soup slurping or not replacing the cap on the toothpaste. What’s your nasty little habit? I have a few that I would rather not discuss!!!

4) She met her first husband, dancer Cris Judd, while working on this video. She met Ben Affleck, to whom she was once engaged, while working on amovie. Think of those you’re closest to — where did you meet them? My husband. On the corner of Kirk and Schenley in 1976

5) She and her current boyfriend, former Yankee Alex Rodriguez, are both workout fanatics. How often do you exercise?  Let’s pass to the next question!

8) Jennifer Lopez posts often on Facebook, and Twitter, and Instagram. Do you feel you spend too much time on social media, do you wish you posted more often, or do you try to avoid it altogether? I post too much, and not enough writing on my blog.

9)  Random question: You’re at a yard sale and come upon an unusual little knicknack that would make the perfect gift for your best friend. The tag says $7. You think that’s rather high for a castoff. Do you pay it? Do you pass on it? Or do you try to get the seller to lower the price? Pay it.

Starting to clean the yard… OR, finishing. I can’t think of plants because although its 70, its going to snow again next week

2) In this song, Tex Ritter sings he doesn’t know what fate awaits him. How strong is your sense of intuition? Tell us about a time you knew what would happen before it occurred.
My second marriage. Too much shit was being pulled that I wasn’t ‘supposed’ to even know about. I knew I couldn’t live that way much longer
3) This song was the theme of a hit movie western by the same name. It starred Gary Cooper as a small-town sheriff. When did you last interact with a member of law enforcement?
The sheriff held the door for me at the post office a few days ago. Dang, he is EASY on the eyes!
4) Grace Kelly co-starred as the “fair-haired beauty” mentioned in this song. Four years later, she gave up films to become Her Serene Highness, Princess Grace of Monaco. Which job seems like more fun — movie star or royal?
Movie star!
5) Though he cultivated a “just plain folk” persona, this week’s featured artist, Tex Ritter, was really cosmopolitan and highly educated, earning a degree in economics from the University of Texas before going on to study pre-law at Northwestern. Do you think the “real you” is consistent with the image you convey?
Not by a long shot!
6) Tex Ritter was the father of Emmy-winning comedic actor, John Ritter. John is remembered fondly as the voice of Clifford, the Big Red Dog. Clifford appeals to children because he is “gentle, friendly, loyal, lovable and clumsy.” Do any of those adjectives apply to you?
I have red hair!!
7) Tex is also the grandfather of Jason Ritter, star of ABC-TV’s Kevin (Probably) Saves the World. If you followed one of your grandparents into their line of work, what would you be doing?

Saturday 9: Nights on Broadway (1975)

Unfamiliar with this week’s tune? Hear it here.

1) It’s estimated that there are more than 200 separate streets called “Broadway” in the United States. Does your town have a Broadway?
We do, two I think. I know one is in a crappy neighborhood!

2) Think of the last time you celebrated well into the night. What street were you on?
224 with Christine. Wow thats been eons!!
3) The Bee Gees blame it all on those songs that go straight to the heart. What love song always makes you go, “aw …?”

4) Even though their sound depended on tight harmonies, all three Bee Gees were heavy smokers, which is not good for the throat. What habit do you have that wish you could break?
EATING!
5) In addition to the three Gibbs who sang this song, there was a fourth brother, Andy, who also had hit records. But did you know the Gibbs’ had a sister, Lesley? Your turn: share some trivia that’s rattling around in your head.6) “Nights on Broadway” was recorded in Miami. When you think of Florida, what comes to mind?
Robert Alvarado

7) In 1975, when this song was popular, Sony introduced the Betamax and JVC gave us the VCR. Sam admits she was glad to see VCRs go because she never could program hers. What about you? Do you adapt easily to new technology?
IF I had to, I could. No, if I WANTED to, but I have no desire. If it were up to me we wouldn’t have DirectTV or any of that. I’m good with ABC CBS and NBC
8) The Bee Gees’ greatest success came two years later, in 1977, with the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever. Have you ever seen the John Travolta movie?
OMGosh…. at LEAST 30 times!

9) Random question — Your mail carrier is very attractive, and flirts with you each day when dropping off the mail. Would you a) ignore it or b) let the carrier know, firmly but politely, that you’re not interested or c) complain to your local post office or d) subscribe to more magazines and order more stuff to guarantee that the mail carrier comes every day?

I best plead the 5th on this one!!!

Sweet Disaster (2016)

Unfamiliar with this week’s song. Hear it here.

1) This video begins outside a convenience store with a sign advertising beer, produce, lotto and an ATM. Will you buy beer, produce or a lotto ticket this weekend? Will you visit an ATM?
No on the beer, yes to the produce and no to the lottery. And no to the ATM.

1
2) As the video progresses, fountain drinks and donuts are consumed. When you stop for a snack during a road trip, what do you usually grab?
Dunkin and a powdered sugar donut. BUT… I am on day 2 without sugar.
3) The lyrics reference “a river of champagne.” When did you last enjoy a spot of the bubbly?
2001. Boy I wish I had that entire day to do over again…
Wanaka-new-zealand-lake-wallpaper-Hd-1920x1440
4) The end of the video features sci-fi/horror images. Is that a genre you enjoy? If not, what kind of books do you read most often?
Oh crap, I forgot to pick up a book for my husband and I while I was out today. I think about genre of books, kind of books about life, are what I like. Jodi Picoult and the like. My husband likes any book you set before him.
3
5) The trio that makes up The Dreamers are dyed-in-the-wool New Yorkers. If you could live in any city or village in the world, would you move or stay right where you are?
I love looking at Zillow, for perhaps my ‘final move’ in the next few years. I have temporarily settled on Cape Hatteras. Its a few years away, and with God’s blessing…for now, I think that is it. ALTHOUGH, I would really like to have some family nearby. I don’t know if in a few years my  cousins Mary Lou and Susan will be in Florida. My cousin Felicia lives 1/2 a year in Clearwater, and my step daughter lives in Fort Myers. Where will my sister and her husband be?  I get a rapid heart beat when I think about it, but then I have to stop and realize its not tomorrow.
4
6) The Dreamers describe themselves as “impractical.”  What about you? Do you consider yourself practical or impractical?
Impractical. I don’t prioritize,  I act on a whim, too often, and you know, there is still that sociopath part of me that I deal with. I have no impulse control. BUT, I am doing research and writing on MINDFULNESS. I’m not doing much better, but I have a funny feeling this is going to take a long while. 2 years? idk.
5
7) They also won’t “listen to those who doubt” them. Sometimes we find the ones who doubt us most are ourselves. What about you? Are you confident, or do you suffer from self doubt?
Peruse #6. I think I am a sociopath with impulse control!!!  Lots of self doubt.
6
8) Do you often remember your dreams?
Always.
7
9) Random question: Would you rather get $100 today, or $250 on this date a year from now?
I’ll take the $250 and wait it out. 🙂

On and On

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we’ve committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. On and On (1977)
Unfamiliar with this week’s song. Hear it here.

1) This song describes the plight of “poor ol’ Jimmy,” who caught his girlfriend kissing someone else. Have you ever spied on a romantic partner?
my second mistake, he used to stay up all night chatting online with women. I would hear the keys ‘click click click’ all night. Then when I would be getting up to go to work at some ungodly hour, he would sleep all day. when we moved back to ohio, he would send sexual texts to young ladies… who saved them and showed me after he left.

2) In this song, Stephen Bishop sings that he “smiles when he feels like dying.” When did you recently put on a happy face, even though you really weren’t all that happy?
you know, its been awhile. its funny though, when things are at their lowest, we still manage to smile. I think that smile washes away the pain we have…. little by little.
3) Stephen Bishop always wanted to be a musician, and as a child he began playing the clarinet. Did you take lessons — dance, art, music — as a child? If yes, did you take them because you enjoyed them, or because your parents made you take them?
I took piano lessons at the insistence of my parents.
4) When he was 12, inspired by The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show, he switched to the guitar and began writing songs. Tell us about someone or something that influenced your career path.
My cousin’s husband. He insisted that I learn to make bread. then viola! i became a baker.
5) Stephen Bishop attended Will C. Crawford High School in San Diego. This school requires students complete 20 hours of community service every year. Tell us about an organization, cause or campaign you volunteered for, either as a student or an adult.
I volunteered for an organization …. CASA. Court Appointed Special Advocate. Standing up for the rights of kids that have been caught up in a custody battle.
6) In 1977, when this song was popular, Seattle Slew won racing’s Triple Crown. Sam’s mother has always been afraid of horses. Is there an animal you’re uncomfortable with?
Can’t say as there is.
7) Also in 1977, moviegoers waited in line for hours to see Star Wars. What’s the longest line you waited in recently?
The line at the meat market is always long. Sometimes I wait, sometimes I go to another store. The last long wait was an hour. I paid dearly for that with my foot and leg.
8) The mini-series Roots first aired in 1977. Today Americans are spending more time and money than ever to research ancestry. How far back can you trace your family tree?
I used to be great at that. Along with any desire for anything that I used to have, that desire fizzled.
9) Random question: It’s often said that nobody’s perfect. How about you? What quality keeps you from being perfect?
Well, that faded desire for anything is a start…

The Love Club (2013)

Unfamiliar with this week’s song. Hear it here.

1) Lorde has said this song is about a time when she fell into “a bad crowd.” Her high-maintenance new friends were all about their romantic dramas and it overwhelmed her. Have you ever had a friend who was just too much work?
Yes. We don’t see much of each other.
2) She sings that she longs to be alone. Where do you go when you want peace and quiet?
My life IS peace and quiet, for the most part
3) Lorde credits her mother for encouraging her verbal skills. “Mum” let her join a theater class when she was just 5 and was always giving her books. Tell us about an encouraging, understanding adult who assisted you when you were growing up.
My grandma Dugan. I miss  her so much.
4) Lorde is not the only celebrity from her class at Belmont School in Auckland, New Zealand. Olympian Eliza McCartney was a classmate who went on to win a bronze medal in Rio for the pole vault. Did you participate in any sports in high school?
noooooooooooooooooooooo
6) Lorde wrote music for one of the Hunger Gamessoundtracks. Have you seen any of the Hunger Games movies, or read any of the books?
I am not aware of seeing any. The guys watch so many movies, but I just read or play a game on my phone.
7) Her favorite candy is Peanut M&Ms. Do you prefer Milk Chocolate, Peanut, Almond, Mint or Cripsy M&Ms?
Almond. And, although you didn’t mention it, Peanut Butter.
8) When Lorde was on stage at Lollapalooza, a sudden storm interrupted her set. The music festival was evacuated and her performance was cancelled. Can you think of a time when the weather had a major impact on your plans?
Seriously I live in Ohio. You know, its snowing when we get up, sunny by mid day, and raining in the evening… or you could change them anyway you want to. So no, weather doesn’t ruin plans.
9) Random question: Please complete this sentence — Before I leave the house, I always __kiss my husband and dogs (not always in that order ;))
