Saturday 9: Black Magic Woman (1970)

Unfamiliar with this week’s tune: Hear it here.

1) Black is this week’s signature color because Friday, November 23, was “Black Friday,” when retailers cut their prices and consumers flock to the stores. Did you score any “Black Friday” bargains?
I’m not much into shopping these days. When I see something on Amazon or Etsy, I snag it up. I have a really hard time being around crowds. I have to say though, I headed out to the Boardman Walmart today, and although 224 was packed, Walmart was like any other day. Praise the Lord!
2) On busy shopping days,  carts often litter parking lots. After loading your items into your car, are you careful to return your shopping cart to the store or the designated cart receptacle?
I put them where they belong. I  try to grab as many as I can to clean up the lot. And I take a cart from the lot as my own, too.
3) Who on your gift list is hardest to buy for?
All of my family. My sister and brother have everything they want, my nieces don’t care for what I buy them… especially if its clothes, and my greats, well I could wrap Christmas lights in paper and a bow and they would be happy!! Plus, I don’t have much in the moola department, so that makes it tough too.
4) Feasting and football are also popular Thanksgiving weekend pastimes. Do your Thursday-Sunday plans include enjoying leftovers or watching a game?
Since my mom and dad passed away, nothing holiday does anything for me. Fortunately or maybe not, my husband is the same. So Thursday was just a Thursday and Sunday, will be just a Sunday. Sadly. I used to love Thanksgiving. Things change.
5) Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade is an annual event. It began in 1924 as a local event in New York. Today it’s nationally televised. Did you watch it?
No, I washed clothes and cleaned the house.
6) What did you give thanks for on Thanksgiving 2018?
In my prayers, I thank God for my family and my few close friends. As I did again this past Thursday.   I truly am thankful for those who understand me.
7) At the first Thanksgiving, there were no forks. Pilgrims ate with spoons and knives, and forks didn’t become popular until the 18th century. Think about your Thanksgiving place setting. Did you have both a salad and a dinner fork?
Nah, I made a spiral ham and we  picked.
8) Pies are a popular Thanksgiving dessert. What kind of pie did you enjoy? Or did you have ice cream? Or did you skip dessert?
I bought a rather tasteless apple pie from Aldis. Paul hated it, but I thought it was ok. Missing salt though. I almost baked! But I have been making candies nuts and dog biscuits for the last 3 weeks to sell. So I’m done for awhile.
9) This week’s featured band, Santana, was named for its founder, Carlos Santana. He was born in Mexico. When at a Mexican restaurant, what do you usually order?
Chimichangas and refried beans. If I have a couple bucks and its not time for my insulin, I’ll order and nurse a margarita
Chimichangas

Saturday 9: The Middle (2018)

Unfamiliar with this week’s tune? Hear it here.

1) This song is about compromise. When did you recently give in a little and meet someone halfway?
I totally compromise all the way all the time

2) She sings that the floors are wet. Are there any floors in your home that could use a good scrub today? If you answered “yes,” will those floors get cleaned this weekend?
The living room and the kitchen
3) She also sings that the cabinets are bare. What’s currently on your shopping list?
I have started selling nuts, for the holidays. Today I spent 68. in Pecans, Almonds, Walnuts and Cashews. Tomorrow… 70. more!!
4) You may be familiar with this song from Target’s TV commercials. Do you often shop at Target?
Now that I am driving again… yes yes YES
5) The lead vocal is handled by Maren Morris, a Grammy winner for “My Church,” which is all about singing with the car radio. What’s the last songyou sang along with?
Something playing at Chic fil A today
6) This past April, Maren married singer-songwriter Ryan Hurd and they have performed onstage together. Who is the last person you sang along with?
My sister… today, at lunch
7) This song was composed by brothers Kyle and Michael Trewartha. With their bleached hair and sunglasses, they look like a pair of surfer dudes — which they are, having grown up in Huntington Beach, CA. Is there a body of water near your hometown?
Well, my back yard looks like the Atlantic Ocean right now…
8) January 2018, when this song debuted, we had a total lunar eclipse. When things like that happen in the sky, do you go out of your way to watch?
No, once the sun goes down, I am lucky to stay awake

9) Random question — They say we’re all young at heart. In what way can you be childlike?

Joking around.

Saturday 9: It Must Be Him (1967)

Unfamiliar with this week’s tune? Hear it here.

1) This song is about a woman waiting impatiently for a phone call. Do you consider yourself patient?
Very

2) Other women (most notably Shirley Bassey and Dottie West) have recorded this song. Harry James and Doc Severinson did instrumental versions. But there’s no record of a male singing “Oh dear God! It must be her! Or I shall die!” Do you think that’s because waiting for the phone to ring is more “a chick thing,” and men simply don’t do it?
I would probably think men DO do it, just  none ever waited on me!  They ‘simply moved on’!!
3) This recording enjoyed a sudden surge of popularity after 20 years when it was included on the soundtrack of Moonstruck, the 1987 film that won Cher an Oscar. Have you seen Moonstruck?
No, not a fan. Never have been
4) This week’s featured artist, Vikki Carr, was born in El Paso, TX. El Paso can proudly proclaim itself one of America’s safest cities. What can your hometown be proud of?
Boom Boom Mancini, And the dad on Married With Children
5) She was a staple on Jerry Lewis’ Labor Day Telethon, raising funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association by performing this song. Is your TV on right now? If so, what are you watching?
No, I’m having a bad day, night, so I am hibernating in my Woman Cave!!!

6) In 1971, Vikki fulfilled a dream of hers by establishing the Vikki Carr Scholarship Foundation. Every year the foundation awards Hispanic American students money to use toward higher education. She says it’s her way of returning “the support and encouragement she received from others” early in her career. If you could establish a charitable foundation, what cause would you like it to benefit?
Orphanages. For decent clothes, teachers and a hope of a better life.
7)  In 1967, when this song was popular, Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed the first heart transplant. Today, one of the most common surgeries performed in the United States is the coronary artery bypass surgery. Have you had any surgeries?
SEVEN in the past year. Hoping for a GLORIOUS 2019!!
8)  Also in 1967, the RMS Queen Mary was retired after 31 years of service. Have you ever traveled by cruise ship?
Not yet…
9) Random question: Who is your oldest living relative?
My Uncle Al is 98!

Alfred Hitchcock Presents

Alfred Hitchcock Presents

Saturday 9: “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” Theme

This week’s song was chosen because this is the last Saturday 9 before Halloween. Are you unfamiliar with this week’s tune? Hear it here.

1) The Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, was born in England. Name another pop culture contribution England has made. All I can think of is the Beetles!

2) This week’s song is recognized as the theme to Hitchcock’s long-running TV show, but “Funeral March for a Marionnette” is a classic piece written for piano in the late 1870s by Charles Gounod. Do you often listen to classical music? I have the most horrifying recollection when I hear classical music. So even the thought of it sends shivers up my spine!!

3) Janet Leigh’s shower scene in  Hitchcock’s Psycho is considered one of the scariest sequences ever filmed. What’s the most frightening movie you’ve ever seen? Not the most recent one… circa 2009, but the 1970’s Last House on the Left!
4) Hitchcock admitted that he “never trusted birds,” and he took that fear and turned it into the movie, The Birds. Is there a member of the animal kingdom that just gives you “the creeps?” Centipedes!

5) Halloween will soon be upon us. Will you carve a jack o’lantern this year? Not this year, its been a rough summer / fall. Hopes for a better 2019

6) What candy will trick or treaters get at your house? Not out in the country. There are only a handful of homes out here!!

7)  When you went trick or treating, did you prefer fantasy costumes (like a storybook character) or scary ones (like a monster)? We never really had a choice! My folks dressed us up!

8)  Which candy was your favorite? Which one were you disappointed to find in your trick or treat bag? Tootsie rolls were the fave… pennies, well…were pennies!!

9) Which do you find scarier — cemeteries or haunted houses? Can you see the hair standing up on the back of my neck? They are both equal.

None of last weeks comments showed up until just tonight! I  will go through them and respond. WordPress is disappointing me. I may have to go back to Blogger!

Saturday 9: Teenage Dream (2010)

Unfamiliar with this week’s tune? Hear it here.1) Much of the video for this week’s song takes place in a convertible and on the beach. How’s the weather where you are? Would you be comfortable riding around with the top down today?
Its gorgeous here in Canfield OH, but I have to admit, I could ride around with the top down all the time (mostly)

2) This video was filmed all around Katy Perry’s hometown of Santa Barbara. Amtrak runs through Santa Barbara via The Pacific Surfliner. Tell us about a memorable train trip.
One year when I was a little girl, my grandma took me to Atlanta to spend time with my Aunt Ann and Uncle Casey and my cuzzbutts. Sketchy on the exact places we were, but I remember that we got snowed in at the train station and my grandma bought me a little doll to get me through the long wait.
3) Katy sings that her boyfriend thinks she’s funny, even when she gets the punchline wrong. Do you think you’re a better joke-teller or audience?
Joke teller!
4) Her “teenage dream” lover is shown working out with a heavy bag. When is the last time you visited a gym?
Well, I saw an ad for Planet Fitness on TV awhile ago!
5) Katy changes her hair a lot. She’s gone from long black hair to cropped blonde hair with stops at red, green and purple. Today, are you having a good hair day?
Nah, I took my shower at 3am and went to bed with wet hair. Nuff said!
6) Katy thinks dimples are “irresistible” and can’t help poking a finger when a dimpled friend smiles. Do you have dimples?
No, my mom had them but didn’t pass them on!!
7) Two of Katy’s fragrances (Meow and Purr) are sold in cat-shaped bottles. Are you wearing a scent as you answer these questions?
Does Secret Coconut deodorant count??
8)  Katy’s favorite dessert is ice cream (specifically Cold Stone Creamery’s Birthday Cake Remix). What’s the last dessert you ate?
I bought a little cup of those Blue Bunny sundae treats. Mint CC. I had it about an hour ago.
9) Random question: How often do you change your bedsheets?
Weekly

Think (1968)
Unfamiliar with this week’s song. Hear it here.
In fond remembrance of The Queen of Soul (1942-2018).

1) As befits one of America’s premiere artists, Aretha Franklin sang at three Presidential inaugurations. The first was Jimmy Carter’s in 1977, when she sang “God Bless America.” What’s your favorite patriotic song?
My Country Tis of Thee…brings me to tears everytime.

2) The daughter of a Baptist minister, Aretha grew up with church music. She told Rolling Stone one of her favorite songs was the hymn, “Victory Is Mine.” What’s your favorite religious song?
Blessed Assurance
3) She welled up a bit when President George H. W. Bush presented her with the nation’s highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005. When is the last time you shed a tear?
Tonight. My precious friend John, his dad passed away yesterday. When I called him, I tried not to cry, but I know how much he loved his parents. His mom died just a little over a year ago. My best ex cousin friend died a week ago. Tonight it just all hit me.
4) In 1980, the Queen of Soul sang for the Queen of England in a Command Performance at The Royal Albert Hall. Have you ever been to London?
Negatory. Short blip… my niece was there last year. She works for the Cleveland Browns. She went with the team. AND… The Brownies have won 2 games so far!! Sorry Stace!!! xoxo
5) Since Aretha had many honorary degrees, it would have been appropriate to refer to her as Dr. Franklin. Who is the last person you referred to by his or her title (Officer, Father, Sgt., Dr., etc.)?
My orthopedic surgeon. He called to see if I was ready for surgery on Monday. yes yes yes yes yes   KNEW KNEE 😉
6)  In this week’s song, Aretha tells her lover that it doesn’t take a high IQ to understand what’s going on in their relationship. Do you know your IQ?
Probably around 900 🙂
7) A sculpture of Aretha is on display at Madame Tussaud’s in New York. Do you think wax museums are cool, or creepy?
cool
8) Aretha and Motown legend Smokey Robinson were literally lifelong friends, since they were playground buddies in Detroit. Smokey is one of the only people who can claim to have seen The Queen of Soul with a bucket in a sandbox. If we went to the playground today, would you head for the swings, the slide or the jungle gym? Or, like Aretha, would you play in the sand?
Swings!!
9) Random question: Do you like pumpkin seeds?
IF the are shelled.

The Nanny

The Nanny

Welcome to Saturday 9. What we’ve committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Saturday 9: The Nanny (1993)

Unfamiliar with this week’s tune? Hear it here.

1) This week’s song is the theme from a sitcom that originally aired from 1993 to 1999. Were you a fan?
We LOVED Nanny Fran !!

2) The song tells us that Fran once worked in a bridal shop. Have you ever worked in a retail setting?
Target. for a couple of Christmases
3) The kids in the Sheffield household appreciate their nanny’s “joie de vivre,” which is defined as “exuberant enjoyment of life.” Are you feeling joie de vivre this morning?
As much as I can! Well, its Friday night, and I’m feeling a little slep ala snoozy
4) “The Nanny” is the colorful one, the one who wears red when everyone else wears tan. What color do you think you look best in?
Grey!!! hahahah
5) The TV show, The Nanny, was the brainchild of actress Fran Drescher. She got the idea while visiting her an old friend in London. Her friend’s pre-teen daughter enjoyed having Fran as a confidante and shopping buddy. Do you enjoy shopping as a leisure activity? Or would you prefer to just dash into a store, grab what you need, and get out and go home?
I just go in and grab what I need, but I love those brousy days with  my sister. We haven’t had any of those in forever.
6) The friend Fran was visiting in London was Twiggy, who was the world’s most famous model in the 1960s. Name another famous model.
Um… That one lady that was married to that one guy on the housewives…
7) The Nanny: The Complete Series is available on DVD on Amazon. It consists of 19 discs and takes 55 hours to watch, start to finish. What TV show have you recently binge watched?
Chicage PD. The last few nights I have been up til 3 watching. Oh and I watched the last series of The Sinner. Now THAT is a psychological thriller. Season 2 just started. Its on USA and Netflix.
8) The Nanny theme was sung by Liz Callaway. Her father, the late John Callway, was a long-time Chicago newscaster. Have you, or has a loved one, ever been on TV?
Not that I can recall…. OH WAIT! My sister works for Alta Behavioral Health Care and does many of their  commercials! How could I forget that … she’s the cutest thing. xoxo
9) Random question — Which of these adjectives comes closest to describing you: sexy, sophisticated or down-to-earth?
Down to earth.

Love Is All Around

Love Is All Around

Saturday 9: Love Is All Around (1970)

Unfamiliar with this week’s tune? Hear it here.

1) This week’s song is the theme from The Mary Tyler Moore Show, a sitcom that originally aired from 1970 to 1977. Were you a fan?
I wanted to live my life in a big city with a pretty apartment! Yes!

2) The song tells us that Mary Richards can turn the world on with her smile. Yet the real-life Mary Tyler Moore said she was uncomfortable with her “wide mouth.” If you could improve on one of your facial features, which would you choose?
Could we remove my myriad of chins!!
3) We also hear that Mary can “take a nothing day and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile.” What do you think makes a day “a nothing day?”
My life these days!
4) Mary works in the newsroom at WJM. Her desk is neat as a pin. Are you neat? Or do you lean to the sloppy side?
Always wanted to be neat, never could quite see it through
5) Mary’s best friend, Rhoda, worked as a window dresser at Hempel’s department store. What department store did you most recently shop at? What did you buy?
When I think of department stores I think of Macy’s Strouss McKelveys… you know, the ones we used to shop at. I don’t shop at those anymore. I’m rather a Target shopper. Which I bought toilet paper and a Starbucks the last time I was there
6) Mary Richards lived in Minneapolis. What city is nearest to where you are right now?
Youngstown. But big cities, Cleveland and Pittsburgh are both about an hour away in different directions.
7) Originally the part of Mary Richards was written as a divorcee, but in 1970, there were no TV shows that centered around a divorced woman. Think about the women in your life. Are most of them married, divorced, single or widowed?
Most of them are a mix of married and separated. I am not sure why everyone just gets separated anymore…. and a couple of widows.
8) The MTM production company logo featured a mewing kitten. The cat was found in a Minneapolis shelter, and, after her sequence was shot, she was adopted by a crew member who named her Mimsie. What’s the name of the last cat — or dog or hamster or rabbit — that you petted?
Garage Kitty

9) Random question — Would you rather have a job that kept you seated on your fanny or standing on your feet?

These days… on my fanny.

Gidget

Gidget

The Theme from Gidget

Welcome to Saturday 9. What we’ve committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don’t have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today’s meme.

Saturday 9: Gidget (1965)

Unfamiliar with this week’s tune? Hear it here.

1) Gidget was a sitcom that ran only one season. Have you ever seen it?
Probably, but I don’t remember it.

2) Gidget is a high school student who is more interested in surfing and boys than in the books. When you were Gidget’s age, was your top priority getting good grades? Or were you more involved in the social side of student life?
Social, unfortunately

3) Gidget’s father was nearly always unflappable when it came to his daughter’s high-spirited shenanigans. Who is the coolest, calmest person you know?
My husband

4) Gidget spends as much time as she can at the beach, hanging out with her best friend Larue. Fair-skinned Larue doesn’t share Gidget’s passion for surfing and prefers to stay on the beach blanket, wearing a floppy hat that protects her from the sun. Are you a sun worshipper? Or, like Larue, are you careful about your exposure to the sun?
I like to get some color, but I burn like a match!!
5) Gidget, the quintessential California girl, was created by Freidrich Kohner, an Austrian-born screenwriter. Can you think of another Austrian import?
Keith Urban… or was he from Australia.
6) Howard Greenfield and Jack Keller wrote this week’s Gidget theme. They also wrote the 1960 hit song, “Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool.” When is the last time you felt foolish?
Yesterday. I wet myself during my biopsy. Here Mary, these are your underpants in the plastic bag!!!
7) This is the show that introduced Sally Field. She went on to win two Oscars and four Emmy Awards. When you think of Sally, what role comes to mind?
The Flying Nun!!
8) Today Gidget is a grandmother. Sally reports that her grandchildren especially enjoy “sleepovers at Granny’s.” Where were you the last time you spent the night away from home?
eh, my stays are usually HOSPITAL stays! so last month
9) Random question — Describe your perfect lazy afternoon.
Oh today was perfect. A nice light breeze in my amazing bed. Not that being in bed was nice, but I was kind of groggy from the meds yesterday and the light off and on nap all day, and my girls in bed with me… it was a nice peaceful breezy day.

I Love Lucy

I Love Lucy

Saturday 9: I Love Lucy (1951)

Unfamiliar with this week’s tune? Hear it here.

1) Before today, did you know that the “I Love Lucy” theme had lyrics?  I did not, but ‘back in the day’, my mom used to sing words to the theme song, so perhaps I did!

2) Since its premiere in 1951, I Love Lucy has never been off the air. Are you a fan? For awhile. I  can watch it for a bit, but then it gets old. BUT, that is the same with most everything every show every project , in my life.

3) On the show, Ricky Riccardo supports his family by performing in a nightclub. Do you know anyone in show business? No, no I do not. Although, I  know some real characters!!

4) Lucy and Ricky’s best friends are Fred and Ethel, their landlord and his wife. Are you friendly with your neighbors? Well, now that we live out in the boonies, as some call it, no. But before Paul and I remarried, I lived on a little street and yes, I knew all but one. My old neighbor used to call her Hermina…the hermit!

5) One of the most popular episodes has Lucy and Ethel working on the conveyor belt at a chocolate factory. When did you last have chocolate? Sadly, last night. I honestly think that I NEED chocolate of some form every day of my life.

6) Another famous episode has Lucy promoting Vitametavegimin. This tonic is made with vitamins, meat, vegetables — and 23% alcohol. Do you read the ingredients statement before you take an over-the-counter medication? Or do you trust that it’s safe because it’s on the store shelf? If its there, I buy it and take it. I used to be more fussy, but since I am on a fixed income now, I take what I can afford. Except for the dogs. They always get  what I cannot afford!!

7) I Love Lucy was filmed before a live audience. Desi Arnaz (Ricky) always maintained he could identify the chuckle of his mother-in-law, who attended every taping. Do you know anyone who has a distinctive laugh?  I think, but since acquiring CRS, I don’t know ( can’t remember shit )

8) The show ended when the Lucille Ball/Desi Arnaz marriage ended. Have you ever had to choose sides when a couple broke up?Nope. And if they think I am going to choose, I’ll choose neither. Friends are friends.

9) Random question — You must eat the same dinner, every day, between now and Labor Day. An identical menu, no deviation. What will you be having? Wedgewood Pizza. Red peppers, mushrooms, pepperoni extra sauce. 😉     That sounds pretty darn good to me!!
